It's time to hit the refresh button!

This time of the year offers the perfect opportunity for a change of pace with room for making improvements in our life. As the rhythm of the New Year continues to herald new intentions around the world, most of us here are still fighting the winter blues and might struggle a little to see the light on the horizon. However, the coming months can be an opportunity to reevaluate what we truly want and let go of the things that no longer serve us.

A good way to start out would be to take stock of our immediate surroundings. Decluttering, cleaning, and decorating the physical space around us could be a small, yet effective first step. Improving our living space helps us improve our physical and mental well-being bringing a sense of calm, rejuvenation, and balance.

You may want to go over the things that you don’t use anymore – say an old jacket, or books that you’ve read long ago and don’t plan on rereading. Instead of just piling them on shelves or stacking them in the back of your wardrobe, donate them! They say one person’s trash is another person’s treasure. Research what options you have for donating, perhaps there is a recycling shop or station in your vicinity, or someone in your community who is less privileged. You may even be surprised to know that a family member or friend may find good use of your old belongings. The benefit of this is three-fold – you get rid of your clutter, you do something good for someone else, and you bring joy to that person in the process.

Cleaning and rearranging your possessions is a great way to improve your surroundings and thus your state of mind. So, why not spend that extra time you have while staying at home due to the pandemic and give yourself the gift of an improved living space? Put on your favorite playlist and get down to it!

When you are done decluttering and cleaning your surroundings, it is time to renew your space; but with what? Think of what brings you joy and peace. Does it resonate with you as an individual – your ambitions, dreams, roots, and beliefs? Why not try having different themes for different parts of your home and decorate them accordingly? You could fill your space with bright colors by adding some fresh flowers and green plants, and perhaps invest in a few key pieces such as that brass figurine that you found impressive or the soapstone flower vase you’ve had your eyes on for the longest time. Fill your space with items that bring you joy and have a personalized wow factor.

Often the only thing that is needed to go from stagnation to growth is simply hitting the refresh button. Once you dust off the cobwebs, make space, and spruce things up, you gain new clarity, a joyful space, and a simpler and more intentional way of living. And what better way to set the tone for the rest of the year?
